Online tutoring has its own benefits. The best thing is that it benefits both the student and the tutors at the same time. You can be anywhere in the world but that would not be a problem if you pursue online tutoring as a career choice or a part of your career. All you’ll need is an internet connection and a device to get on it (preferably a computer). Curbing geographical barriers is its biggest benefit.
In this article, we are going to provide you with a complete guide to online tutoring. If you are into it, this might come in very handy for you. Let’s begin.
So how can you get yourself started with online tutoring?
It’s the easiest step of the lot. Online tutoring doesn’t require a whole lot of costly gadgets and preparations to begin with. Like we said before, you just need an internet connection and a computer to get on it. But of course, you should have a firm knowledge of the subject that you are going to teach.
You will also need a webcam (nowadays, it’s almost cheap as chips) and a microphone accompanied with a headset. That should be enough. And now let’s refer to the tools that you can use.
What about Skype?
Several free applications are available on the internet that you can put to good use. We will talk about the easiest and the most convenient of the lot that you can get at a moment’s notice.
With skype, you will be able to engage in video conferencing free of charge with your student. But do remember that it requires a high speed broadband connection. So ensure the fact that you have a strong signal during your lessons.
You will be able to share documents and images on this platform as well. This is a feature that can be extremely beneficial for your tutoring endeavors.
How about going for a skype-like platform that also comes with a white board?
This one goes for you if you are real serious about turning online tutoring into a full-time career of yours. Of course, you can go for it because it does give you immense satisfaction along with a lucrative ROI (return on investment).
This virtual whiteboard is quite similar to that of a class white board. It just exists from an abstract point view; that’s the only difference. You
You‘ll be able to scribble on it and at the same time, your student will be able to see the same from his/her respective view point. Some advanced whiteboards provide a two-way interaction between both the student and the teacher. Online tutoring platforms with advanced whiteboard features do not come free of cost. But if you go for it, you can be assured of one thing that it’s totally worth the money.
Sharing presentations- How about Google Docs?
“Google Docs” is free but undoubtedly pretty effective. Through “Google docs” you will be able to share documents, presentations, spreadsheets in the blink of an eye. The same will be applicable for your student on the other end. You wanted an interactive session; right? Using google docs, you can have one in no time and the best thing is that it’s absolutely free of cost.
Of course, you want to promote yourself among students to get yourself more students; don’t you? Social media can be your best bet but do remember that it will not be very easy at the start. You need patience. You need to chalk up innovative ideas to promote yourself on the internet through various media like blog posts, images, infographics and so on.
Word of mouth also plays a very important role in promotions but since your business is online, you are expected to promote yourself on the same platform first.
There’s also a second choice. You can sign yourself up on any established tutoring platforms to get yourself students of your choice. This process does require some nominal investments but it’ll undoubtedly be worth the money.
How can you accept your payments?
The easiest and one of the safest ways of accepting overseas as well domestic payments is through PayPal. This mode of payment acceptance is quite popular among online tutors. You can adopt the same tactic here. You will just have to share your email ID and in comes your payment in a jiffy. You can then transfer the paypal amount to your bank account whenever you want, wherever you are and whatever you want.
You can always opt to accept payments through bank transfers but that would mean sharing sensitive account information with the other party. PayPal is the safest of the lot.
So you see the toughest part of online tutoring is getting a firm grip of the subject that you are going to teach. The setup is just a piece of cake. Promotion might take some time but with diligence, you will be able to cross that hurdle easily and effortlessly. We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
